Any Mode of Transport

EXWEx WorksAny transport mode

The seller makes goods available at their own premises. The buyer is responsible for all costs and risks from that point forward — including loading.

FCAFree CarrierAny transport mode

Seller delivers the goods to a named carrier or nominated party at a named place. Risk transfers when goods are handed to the carrier. FCA is the recommended alternative to FOB for containerized cargo.

CPTCarriage Paid ToAny transport mode

Seller pays freight to the named destination, but risk transfers to the buyer once goods are handed to the first carrier. The seller may use multiple carriers.

CIPCarriage and Insurance Paid ToAny transport mode

Same as CPT, but the seller is also required to purchase and provide insurance for the buyer's risk during transport. CIP requires minimum Institute Cargo Clauses (A) — the highest cover.

DAPDelivered at PlaceAny transport mode

Seller delivers goods to a named place in the destination country, ready for unloading. Import duties and taxes are the buyer's responsibility.

DPUDelivered at Place UnloadedAny transport mode

The only Incoterm where the seller is responsible for unloading at the destination. Risk transfers after goods are unloaded at the named terminal or place.

DDPDelivered Duty PaidAny transport mode

Maximum obligation for the seller. Seller delivers goods to the named destination, cleared for import, with all duties and taxes paid.

Sea & Inland Waterway Only

FASFree Alongside ShipSea & inland waterway only

Seller delivers goods alongside the vessel at the named port of shipment. Risk transfers when goods are placed alongside the ship.

FOBFree On BoardSea & inland waterway only

One of the most widely used terms. Risk transfers when goods are loaded on board the vessel at the named port of shipment.

CFRCost and FreightSea & inland waterway only

Seller pays cost and freight to the named destination port, but risk transfers to the buyer when goods are on board the vessel at origin.

CIFCost, Insurance and FreightSea & inland waterway only

Seller pays cost, freight, and minimum insurance to the named destination port. Risk transfers when goods are on board at origin.
